The KGUMSB in collaboration with JDWNRH, NMS conducted the first of its kind sensitization workshop on Leishmaniasis for dental and ENT healthcare professionals in three cohorts – Bumthang, Samdrup Jongkhar and Paro. The sensitization program was supported by the ongoing collaborative Leishmaniasis project between KGUMSB, Bhutan and University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and funded by National Institute of Health (NIH), USA. The mucocutaneous form of leishmaniasis (MCL) is an important public health concern in the country, often presenting with initial symptoms in the mouth, nose, or throat. Its early detection and treatment are vital to prevent severe and often disfiguring complications. As Dental and ENT professionals in the districts are often the first point of contact for patients with potential MCL symptoms, they play a crucial role in improving patient care through early recognition and timely management including early referral. The capacity building of these frontline health workers was identified as priority activity which is part of the initiatives to strengthen leishmaniasis surveillance, prevention and ultimately contribute to achieve leishmaniasis elimination in the country.
