Central Regional Referral Hospital (CRRH) in Gelephu in collaboration with Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) inaugurated Health and Medical Research Centre (HMRC) on 19th July, 2025. The event was graced by Honorable Governor of Gelephu Mindfulness City, Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering. The event was attended by the representatives from KGUMSB and VDCP; doctors and unit incharges of the CRRH. The executives, faculties and staff of KGUMSB and MOH attended the events online.  

The primary of aim of establishing HRMC is to conduct research using available data and identify additional research priorities at CRRH and district hospitals in collaboration with national and international research centers and universities. HRMC will generate high-quality scientific evidence to support medical decision-making and national healthcare policies. HRMC will also provide research mentorship services to the students and healthcare professionals being posted at CRRH. 

The Governor appreciated the initiative taken by CRRH and KGUMSB, commending the establishment of HMRC as a timely and significant step in response to the growing need for evidence-based decision-making in clinical practices, public health preparedness, health system strengthening, capacity building, and the career development of health professionals. He assured full support from the GMC management team and emphasized that HMRC could potentially be integrated with other research centers under GMC in the future. He also encouraged the entire team to continue their efforts and maintain the current momentum.

To maximize the Centre’s potential and ensure alignment with national research priorities, the HRMC at CRRH will work in close collaboration with the Central Research and Innovation Division of MECRIT at KGUMSB.

The establishment of HMRC has been financially supported through the collaborative research Project of the KGUMSB and University of Colombo, Sri Lanka under NIH funding under the project title Investigation of Epidemiology and Transmission of Leishmaniasis in Sri Lanka and Bhutan”.
