13 August 2025 – Dr. Pem Namgyal was appointed today as the President of the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan by the Chairperson of the Governing Council of the University, Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, Hon’ble Minister for Health, Royal Government of Bhutan. He is the second President of the University.

Dr. Pem Namgyal has over 30 years of distinguished service in the health sector, with extensive experience in public health. Of these, 22 years were with the World Health Organization (WHO), where he held key leadership roles at WHO Headquarter in Geneva and at the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia in New Delhi, most recently serving as Director of Programme Management.

An epidemiologist, public health expert, and global health leader, Dr. Pem Namgyal has made significant contributions to advancing health systems, strengthening disease control programmes, and promoting equitable access to health services in the region.

As President of KGUMSB, Dr. Pem Namgyal will spearhead the advancement of medical education, research, and innovation at the nation’s only medical university.
