A four-member delegation from Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), Munich, Germany visited Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) from 11th to 17th May 2025 to further strengthen and expand this strategic partnership.

The KGUMSB has been actively collaborating with LMU since 2015—particularly in the area of Academic Teacher Training in Medical Education. This partnership has proven mutually beneficial, supporting faculty development through exchange programs and collaborative training initiatives that have significantly enhanced the quality of medical education.

Building on this strong foundation, KGUMSB and LMU are currently engaged in an Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Partnership Project titled “Capacity Building on Medical Education, Interprofessional Education, and International Health.” 

The main purspose of the visit were:

  • To review and finalize project activities under the SDG Partnership, including:
    • Short-term teacher training programs in Medical and Interprofessional Education
    • Medical student and faculty exchange programs
    • Collaborative PhD programs
  • To visit faculties and hospitals, and engage with academics, students, and healthcare providers to gain deeper insights into the Bhutanese Medical Education System, with a view to identifying opportunities for future collaboration.
  • To facilitate the exchange of ideas and expertise between the two universities in order to enhance and sustain this long-standing partnership.

The visit is expected to further strengthened ties between the two institutions and laid out clear plans for deepening future collaboration in the following areas:

  • Close cooperation within the framework of the Center for International Health (CIH)
  • Continued focus on medical education and faculty development
  • Expansion of academic exchange and mobility opportunities, especially for students
  • Reinforcement of shared goals within the SDG Partnership Program
  • Enhanced collaboration on international health programs at CIH
  • Joint efforts to promote impactful, context-sensitive research initiatives

This visit marks a significant milestone in advancing international cooperation in medical education and reflects a shared commitment to building institutional capacity in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
