Scholarship Announcement

The Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB), is pleased to announce the availability of following scholarships (fully funded) offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan with special program for Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) Grant Project implemented by Oita University of Japan and KGUMSB as detailed below:

1. PhD in Medical Sciences (Specialization in Gastric Cancer Research and Endoscopy)
Duration: 4 years Program
Qualification: MD level preferably Medicine or Surgery
Additional eligibility criteria: As specified below

2. PhD in Medical Sciences (Specialization in Gastric Cancer Research in Genomics and Molecular Biology)
Duration: 4 years Program
Qualification: MBBS, or with master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biomedical Sciences or public health laboratory
Additional eligibility criteria: As specified below
1. Interested applicants from KGUMSB or MoH may kindly submit the following documents to the HR Section – Office of the President, by 20th January 2022 (4PM).
1.1 Application for the scholarship (Addressed to the President of KGUMSB)
1.2 Curriculum Vitae
1.3 Academic Transcripts and certificates (bachelor and master degree levels)
1.4 Training Certificates (if any)
1.5 Security Clearance Certificate (Valid and copy)
1.6 Audit Clearance Certificate (Valid and copy)
1.7 A copy of Bhutanese Citizenship Identity Card
1.8 A copy of Medical Fitness Certificate issued by a competent RGoB medical doctor.
1.9 Merit/Other certificates (if any)
1.10 Other additional requirements of Oita University and MEXT scholarship:

1.10.1. Eligibility Criteria:
a) Born in later than 2nd April 1987
b) Grade Point Average (GPA) more than 2.3 or equivalent calculated as per the MEXT formula

1.10.2. Applicants must fulfill one of the following requirements
a) Completed 18 years of school education in countries other than Japan.
b) Graduate from a university after completing 16 years of school education in a foreign country (other than Japan), and research Medicine for at least two years in a university or institute, etc.
c) Working Adult Student of at least 24 years of age, who are deemed by Oita University to have the scholastic ability of graduate in Medicine.

1.10.3. Non-eligibility: Those who meet any one of the following conditions are ineligible.
a) Those who are military personnel or military civilian employees at the time of their arrival in Japan or during the period of the payment of the scholarship.
b) Those who are previous grantees of Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship programs (including those who withdraw from the scholarship program after the arrival in Japan).
c) Those who are currently also applying to another program under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship system.
d) Those who are planning to receive scholarship money from an organization other than MEXT (including a government organization of the applicant’s country) on top of the scholarship money provided by MEXT after the start of the scholarship payment period.
e) Those who have completed a doctoral course and have no intention to obtain a degree.

1.10.4. Evaluation of English or Japanese language ability: At least English (or Japanese) language ability has to be evaluated by taking one of the examinations.

Recommended Score:
1. English language ability at the level of CEFR B2 (Equally as IELTS = 6.5 – 5.5, TEAP CBT = 795 – 600, TOEFL iBT 94 – 72) or above
2. Japanese language ability at the level of JLPT N2/N1 level

1.10.5. Allowance
As a monthly allowance, 145,000 yen per month (approximately Nu. 93,000/month) shall be paid depending on the course enrolled in doctoral courses. Due to the situation of the Japanese Government’s budget, the amount of payment may be subject to change each fiscal year. If a grantee is absent from the university for an extended period, the scholarship shall be suspended for that period.

Preference will be given to the applicants with the background in infectious diseases and research, endoscopists, bioinformatics, and other fields related to SATREPS project. The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the KGUMSB and forwarded to Oita University and MEXT for further selection and confirmation of the scholarship. Candidates shortlisted by the KGUMSB and Oita University may have to submit additional documents as per the requirements of Oita University and MEXT which will be directly communicated to the shortlisted candidates.
