Dr. Kuenzang Chhezom

Dr. Kuenzang Chhezom is a senior academic, clinician, and health systems leader with nearly two decades of experience spanning medical education, laboratory medicine, research, and health policy in Bhutan and the South-East Asia region. She currently serves as the Registrar of Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan and as an Associate Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She is also a Laboratory Consultant at Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH), Thimphu. 

Dr. Chhezom earned MBBS from Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, in 2004 and completed her MD in Biochemistry from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka in 2014.. She began her career as a clinician in regional and district hospitals across Bhutan before transitioning into academic medicine and laboratory sciences. Since joining KGUMSB in 2015, she has played a pivotal role in postgraduate medical education, curriculum development, academic governance, and institutional leadership. 

Over the years, Dr. Chhezom has held several key academic and administrative positions, including Deputy Dean (Student Affairs), Officiating Deputy Dean (Academics), Postgraduate Residency Programme Coordinator, Internship Coordinator, and Managing Editor of the Bhutan Health Journal. She currently serves as a Member of the Research Ethics Board of Health, ICD-11 Focal Person for the Ministry of Health, and Focal Person for Institutionalising Science Advice to the Government. 

Dr. Chhezom is a researcher with extensive experience in non-communicable diseases, cardiovascular risk assessment, gestational diabetes, laboratory quality systems, evidence-based medicine, and vaccine research. She has led and contributed to multiple nationally and internationally funded research projects, including large-scale studies supported by UNFPA, WHO, JICA, SATREPS, Moderna Inc., and the Royal Government of Bhutan. She has published widely in peer-reviewed national and international journals and actively supervises MD postgraduate students. 

Her technical expertise includes national guideline development, ICD-11 and Medical Certification of Cause of Death training, Good Clinical Laboratory Practice, curriculum design, research mentorship, and health workforce planning. In recognition of his contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic, she was a recipient of the Druk Thuksey (Heart Son of the Thunder Dragon) Award as part of the national healthcare team. 

Dr. Chhezom remains committed to strengthening medical education, promoting ethical and high-quality research, and advancing evidence-informed health policy in Bhutan.
