THE KGUMSB
The Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) was established in 2013 under the University of Medical Sciences Act of Bhutan, 2012, and was officially launched on 28 February 2015 by Her Majesty The Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck. As the first and only medical university in the country, KGUMSB serves as the apex institution responsible for overseeing all existing and future entities engaged in medical and healthcare education and training in Bhutan.
As mandated by its founding Act, the University is entrusted with advancing medical education, promoting research, and enhancing the quality of healthcare services. Guided by its vision of being “a premier centre of excellence in medical education, research, and quality healthcare,” KGUMSB is committed to developing a competent, compassionate, and responsive health workforce to strengthen Bhutan’s healthcare system and improve health outcomes and the overall well-being of the population.
The University currently comprises four constituent faculties: the Faculty of Nursing and Public Health, the Faculty of Traditional Medicine, the Faculty of Postgraduate Medicine, and the Faculty of Undergraduate Medicine. In addition, KGUMSB is affiliated with four private nursing institutions: Apollo Bhutan Institute of Nursing (ABIN), Thimphu; Royal Thimphu College (RTC); Aura Academy of Health Sciences (AAHS), Phuentsholing; and YT Nursing Academy, Bumthang.
KGUMSB is governed by its Governing Council, as stipulated in the University of Medical Sciences Act of Bhutan, 2012, which provides policy direction, strategic oversight, and institutional support to ensure the effective functioning of the University.
