Thimphu, 5 October 2026: <\/strong>The Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB) held a ceremony for the appointment and re-appointment of members of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), KGUMSB . The Hon’ble President of KGUMSB, Dr. Pem Namgyal, graced the ceremony as Chief Guest and presented the appointment and re-appointment orders to the members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reconstituted Board brings together experienced professionals from clinical medicine, nursing, public health, traditional medicine, the basic sciences, social sciences and law, along with lay and community representatives. This multidisciplinary and independent composition follows national requirements and international standards for research ethics committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his address, the Hon’ble President highlighted the IRB’s central role in protecting the rights, safety, dignity and well-being of people who take part in research. He noted that rigorous, independent and timely ethical review is the foundation of credible health research, and that it is essential to KGUMSB’s mandate as Bhutan’s premier institution for medical education, research and health care. He thanked the members for their commitment and encouraged them to uphold integrity, impartiality and confidentiality in their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the Board, the Chairperson of the KGUMSB IRB thanked the Hon’ble President and the University for their trust and continued support. The Chairperson affirmed the Board’s commitment to fair, transparent and timely review of research protocols, guided by the Declaration of Helsinki, CIOMS International Ethical Guidelines and ICH Good Clinical Practice. The Chairperson also emphasised that the Board will continue to strengthen research ethics capacity among faculty, students and investigators, so that research at KGUMSB remains scientifically sound and ethically robust, and responsive to the health needs of the Bhutanese people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KGUMSB IRB reviews, approves and monitors research involving human participants conducted by the University’s faculty, students and collaborating partners. Its aim is to ensure that all such research meets the highest ethical and scientific standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University thanked the outgoing members for their valuable service and congratulates the newly appointed and re-appointed members on their appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
